{"id":415,"date":"2014-01-31T14:20:48","date_gmt":"2014-01-31T14:20:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/smarterexercise.org\/blog\/?p=415"},"modified":"2017-03-07T01:33:17","modified_gmt":"2017-03-07T01:33:17","slug":"do-you-need-a-place-to-workout-too","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.smarterexercise.org\/home\/2014\/01\/31\/do-you-need-a-place-to-workout-too\/","title":{"rendered":"Do You Need a Place to Workout, Too?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A client will occasionally ask why my wife Sandy and I chose to open Smarter Exercise. \u00a0I usually reply, half-jokingly that it&#8217;s because &#8220;we needed a place to workout.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The honest truth is\u2026 we <em>really did <\/em>need a place to workout! \u00a0In order to make the most of our time and still get a great workout, we needed a few things. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>First<\/strong>, we needed a professional environment. We wanted a place where we could go and just workout without any hassles.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I&#8217;m impatient, and I don&#8217;t like to wait in line for equipment.<\/li>\n<li>We didn&#8217;t want to hassle and deal with inconsiderate people who hold-on to equipment through multiple sets because they see you standing there and they don&#8217;t want to wait for <i>you<\/i>, or don&#8217;t wipe down after themselves&#8230;<\/li>\n<li>Plus, some gyms purposely keep the temperature too hot because people assume they must be doing something worthwhile\u00a0just because they&#8217;re sweating&#8230;<\/li>\n<li>Too many times, machines and equipment don&#8217;t have clear instructions, or are out-of-service altogether&#8230;<\/li>\n<li>And I can&#8217;t take it when the music is too loud or they&#8217;re playing music with inappropriate lyrics.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">S<\/span>econd<\/strong>, we wanted a nice place that would be convenient, or we would never go.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Third<\/strong>, we needed it to be safe. If we\u2019re going to get hurt, we\u2019re going to get hurt doing something that is a lot more fun and exciting than routine exercise \u2013 you know like skydiving, swimming with sharks, or snowboarding.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fourth<\/strong> (<em>OK, we wanted more than just a few things<\/em>), we also wanted privacy. Let\u2019s face it, more people mean more distractions. Whether they are talking on their phones, talking to other gym members, hovering, staring, posturing, posing in front of a mirror, being rude, being nice \u2013 whatever they\u2019re being \u2013 they are being a distraction. Hey, I like people, but I don\u2019t want to share their germs or sit in their sweat \u2013 yuck! gross!<\/p>\n<p>Oh, and <strong>fifth<\/strong>, we need it to be really, really clean!<\/p>\n<p>Seriously, we needed a place to workout and we wanted it to be nice. \u00a0To workout to us means progressive strength training. We needed a nice place to workout <i>because<\/i> we want all the physical and mental benefits of being stronger. We want to be strong forever, which means we\u2019re going to have to participate in progressive strength training forever \u2013 FOREVER!\u00a0 If you want to be strong forever, too, you have to strength-train FOREVER, too!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sixth<\/strong>, we needed a place to workout that we could go back to over and over and over\u2026 dare I say it, we needed a place to workout that we actually <b><i>enjoyed<\/i><\/b> \u00a0going to&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Seventh<\/strong>, it would helpful if, at this imaginary professional, quick, convenient, safe, private, clean, enjoyable place, I could make an appointment for my workout. My life &#8211; like yours, I&#8217;m sure &#8211; is very scheduled. \u00a0I need to reserve a little time each week for my myself \u2013 it has to be on my calendar, or it will get squeezed-out by other appointments that are on my calendar.
